A doula (pronounced doo-lah) is a trained non-medical professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a mother and her partner before, during, and shortly after childbirth.
In simple terms, a doula is your dedicated companion and advocate. We do not perform clinical tasks like checking blood pressure, giving medical advice, or delivering the baby. Instead, we work alongside your clinical care team (doctors, nurses, midwives) to ensure you feel respected, informed, and empowered throughout your journey. Research consistently shows that the presence of a doula improves both physical and psychological outcomes, leading to reduced intervention rates and increased birth satisfaction.

The Midwife
Robert Lougheed Memorial Award
"The Midwife" was inspired by the story of Loren's own great grandmother, a Midwife in Kansas who delivered approximately 1,500 babies in the early 1900s.

The composition here is of the rarely depicted subject of a midwifery nurse weighing an infant. It is almost certainly a portrait of Preston’s wife, Edith, who worked as a midwife and who he first met during his early days in Yorkshire.
Colonial Midwife
A colonial midwife was a community-based healthcare provider who assisted childbirth, provided medial care for common illnesses and sometimes performed other community duties like preparing bodies for burial.
